Continental Vapor Mountain Bike Tyre: The Vapor tyre has a 2.1" tread, and is designed for cross country trail riding & racing. Continental have worked on how they could improve on the current MTB tyres on the market. Two areas that they concentrated on were tread stability and tread traction. By using the GravityArc™ concept as explained above, they have reinforced the Vapor's lugs by providing each of them with a wide base, so that they flex less under load, thus improving the tyres cornering & braking characteristics. These "Arcs" (lug bases) will also provide grip of their own on softer terrain where the tyres footprint has more volume than tyres with a flat tread base. The tops of the lugs are hard & sharp so as to hook up & bite more rapidly & effectively through wet or loose surfaces. Gravity Arc Tread Design: The new design of the Vapor uses even the space in between the lugs to increase traction. 3D faces enlarge the surface of the tread. The surfaces are determined by free falling u-bends or Arcs. The shape comes naturally, and at a minimum material input to keep weight low. The contact patch or "footprint" of the tyre to the ground gets bigger, therefore improving traction. Additionally, the Arcs/u-bends reinforce the tread blocks which helps the tyre hook up more effectively. The lugs flex less under load, so steering response is improved as the shoulder knobs do not squirm during cornering. This is because the stresses are dissipated over a wider surface area. The tops of the tread blocks are sharp & hard These cut through wet & loose surfaces more rapidly Additionally, they hold very well on hard stony ground to give a more responsive ride The edges of the lugs are rectangular to the incoming traction & steering forces This way the lugs can take the forces and deliver them directly to the ground without braking loose The shoulder edges (left) run with the rotation for fast & secure cornering The centre tread edges (below left) run at 90° to rotation for perfect traction & braking |
