Many ski areas are converted into mountain bike venues during the summer. Riders take chair lifts to the starting point at the top of the mountains.

Recent downhill world championship rounds have been held at Lugano in Switzerland, Les Gets in France, Fort William in Britain and Kaprun in Austria.

There are only a small percentage of riders who are world class competitors, and so people who ride for fun are unlikely to ever ride these top class tracks.

However, some of these tracks are open to non professionals and are popular as holiday destinations.

In some areas finding a good place to ride your mountain bike can be difficult, particularly if you are into downhill and freeriding.

To find other people to ride with and to share knowledge of other venues, you should look in back of a mountain bike magazine or by doing research on the internet, as they have information about many clubs and gatherings.

There are many small venues which offer a good range of riding.
